The Mortal Kombat movie has had a turbulent few months. The film’s future has felt uncertain this year as it contended with the coronavirus pandemic. While initially slated for January, it was pushed back indefinitely as Warner Bros. tried to figure out what to do with it. It seems that fears it might be some way off were somewhat unfounded though. The film has now gotten its release date – April 16, 2021. That’s much sooner than anyone expected. Posting to Twitter, producer Todd Garner released a poster for the film featuring the release date. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Manage cookie settings — Todd Garner (@Todd_Garner) December 14, 2020 For a film out so soon, it’s odd that we have not received a trailer yet, although Garner added that it is coming in the new year. As announced previously, the film will be coming to HBO Max on the same day as cinemas meaning you will be able to get your fill from the comfort of your own home. It will still show at theatres, but obviously, only in those that are open during the pandemic. Besides the poster, we really don’t know much about the film apart from the fact that it concluded shooting around a year ago. We know it’s set to be a reboot and thus will have no connection to the older films, but its story and how far it will go into the zany lore of the games hasn’t yet been made clear. For that, we will have to wait for that promised trailer.
