It was recently announced that The Last of Us Part 2 would face an indefinite delay due to logistical issues caused by COVID-19. Sony was worried that it wouldn’t be able to fulfill its physical orders.
Now it seems the company is willing to take a gamble, perhaps due to the success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which sold well despite having a staggered and limited physical release. The Last of Us Part 2 is now releasing on June 19. Obviously the big concern with a staggered release is people who get it early might spoil the game for those who get it late. Unfortunately for Naughty Dog, massive, important story spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 have already leaked online. So I guess that’s not as much of a concern now and they just need to get the game out. The studio commented on these events today in tweet. “We know the last few days have been incredibly difficult for you,” the message begins. “We feel the same. It’s disappointing to see the release and sharing of pre-release footage from development. Do your best to avoid spoilers and we ask that you don’t spoil it for others.” “The Last of Us Part II will be in your hands soon. No matter what you see and hear, the final experience will be worth it.” Once work has wrapped on the game - and presumably when this pandemic is over - work will begin on a The Last of Us television series with HBO.
The Last of Us Part 2 will be a beast of a game, shipping on two discs. Naughty Dog wanted to pack more story content in, instead of focusing on a multiplayer mode this time. We played The Last of Us Part 2 last year and you can check out our preview at that link. We also recently had a rewatch of the trailers and took another look at the Seraphites - bad guys who are seemingly a murderous Christian cult.
