Earlier this year, Star Wars blogs reported that Project Luminous, Disney’s codename for the next phase of Star Wars, would be a cross-media campaign with overlapping, interconnected stories set hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga. A crucial detail in the original leaks was that this initiative would start with a video game, hence why we covered it in the first place. Today, Disney revealed Luminous’ official name - Star Wars: The High Republic.
Though a number of details - such as the name - had been accurately leaked, Disney’s official release sadly makes no mention of video games. Instead, this “storytelling initiative” will focus on comics and novels, with a big story to be told through works of different authors. Disney also confirmed that this particular period won’t overlap with any films or series in production. This fills the initial rumour with a few holes, but it’s also disappointing in light of EA’s cancellation of another original Star Wars game, and the running rumour that a Knights of the Old Republic remake/reboot is in the works. Perhaps it was never wise to assume that video games would be involved in the first place. Disney’s press release makes it pretty definitive that this is a comics-only venture, but the future could involve more than that, should it find traction.
