Epic’s expansion into more traditional media like films, TV and other scripted video projects was reported today by The Information today, as Epic considers what other avenue streams are open to it now that Apple has put a halt to its mobile gaming escapades thanks to the massive lawsuit you’ve probably read about. According to the report from The Information, three high-ranking LucasFilm employees – including the studio’s former VP of physical production, Jason McGatlin – joined Epic Games earlier this year, hinting that cinematic projects from the company are a pretty big priority....

That’s according to the latest figures published by Epic Games which note the store now boasts 194 million users, which is an increase of 34 million from 2020. Daily active users peaked at 31.1 million, and peak concurrent users reached 13.2 million. December’s monthly active users peaked at 62 million users, which is an 11% increase from 2020’s 56 million. Folks also bought plenty of games in 2021. According to Epic, around $840 million was spent through the store last year, a figure that’s up 20% from 2020....

Every month, market intelligence group Superdata, a Nielsen company, publishes a report about the health of digital markets. The report covers the top earners on PC, consoles and mobile. Needless to say, the success of Fortnite made it a regular target for analysis on these reports. Superdata’s January report said that Fortnite’s revenue has hit its lowest level since November 2017. While Epic Games did not respond to this specifc report, the developer said it takes issue with Superdata’s findings in general, questioning its analysts’ methodology in a statement to Games Industry....

The ruling in favor of developers states that Apple will have to open up payment options for software sellers on the App Store. This means that Apple can no longer keep developers from using direct-buy options within their apps (thanks, Ars Technica). Apple also cannot stop app-makers from communicating with customers regarding app purchases such as through an email newsletter. The judge gave Apple 90 days from today, September 10, to comply with the ruling, meaning it has until December to make the changes....

Rockfish Games has unveiled the next major update coming to Everspace 2, the studio’s stellar modern take on Freelancer. The patch, due April 28, will be the game’s first major one in Early Access. For starters, the update continues the game’s story with three new main missions, and three side missions. Elek, from the original game’s Encounters expansion, returns with this update as one of your in-game companions, offering unique dialogue and gameplay perks....

The title, admittedly, had a bit of a shaky start when servers would not cooperate after it went free. Mediatonic took to socials to apologize, and it became pretty clear that the developer must’ve never expected this many players to be trundling through assault courses. Just 48 hours after becoming free, Fall Guys had raked in 20 million players. Now, announced via Fall Guys’ Twitter account, the game has seen over 50 million players stumble in and take to the stage in just two weeks....

Far Cry 6 takes the series back to an exotic, tropical location. The fictional country of Yara is ruled by dictator Anton Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito. If you spotted some Cuba inspirations in the reveal trailer, you’re not alone. That’s because Cuba was indeed the main inspiration behind the setting and culture of Far Cry 6. “We wanted to tell a story about revolution, and when you tell a story about revolution, you’re talking about guerrilla warfare,” narrative director Navid Khavari explained on the Ubisoft blog....

Yesterday, a Insider Gaming report stated as much, citing sources familiar with both projects. Far Cry 7 is said to be under development as Project Blackbird, with the multiplayer game known as Project Maverick. The report states both titles started as one game before being separated into two after Far Cry executive producer Day Hay defected to Blizzard Entertainment in 2021. Both games are said to be tentatively slated for a 2025 release....

From my time with FIFA 22 so far, one of my big takeaways is that goalkeepers are better. They get into better positions, particularly in one-on-one situations, and they pull off more impressive saves. You can’t just finesse shot your way to victory. This doesn’t mean I haven’t already scored some blinders in my handful of hours playing, but I’m not constantly looking at my keeper and wondering why he’s still pulling in £100k a week....

The PC edition of Final Fantasy 16 might be launched after the PlayStation 5 version. That’s going by an advert from the PlayStation Brazil YouTube channel – as spotted by GamesRadar – for upcoming games on Sony’s new console. This includes the likes of Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. But when Final Fantasy 16 appears, text appears at the bottom of the screen saying that the title will be only available on PS5 for a limited time....

Since the moment it was announced, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade felt like a decent, if predictable upgrade. It ramps up effects quality, offers framerate and visuals modes, brings sharper textures and so on. The game even takes advantage of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers - all standard fare for a PS5 upgrade, as we’ve seen in most other last-gen games getting enhanced editions on PS5. Those technical upgrades are fine and dandy, of course, but they don’t quite take full advantage of the PS5 hardware....

First-person puzzler The Turing Test will be released for Nintendo Switch on February 7. In the game, you play Ava Turing, an engineer for the International Space Agency. As Ava, you are tasked with discovering the cause behind the disappearance of the ground crew stationed on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Here, you will be subjected to tests by the station’s resident AI, Tom. The puzzles were created by the missing ground crew but the reason is unknown to Ava upon arrival....
