According to an in-depth new report from VGC, the Knack, LocoRoco and Patapon developer has seen the “vast majority” of its staff let go ahead of their contract renewal date of April 1, following reports that Sony ‘sidelined’ the studio late last year. It looks like most of the talent in the long-running studio has been let go, with Sony keeping on just the localization and business teams. It also appears ASOBI Team, the folks behind the wildly popular Astro Bot games, have been ringfenced and will continue making games as a studio in their own right....

Nintendo announced a special Skyward Sword Loftwing Amiibo to go along with the launch of the HD remaster in July yesterday. You have less than 20 days to play Gearbox’s oft-forgotten team shooter Battleborn. Per an updated blog post on publisher 2K’s website, Battleborn is being taken offline on January 25, at which point the game will no longer be playable. That’s right, you can’t even run through the single-player campaign once the servers goes down. This follows 2K removing the game from storefronts in November 2019 and the ability to buy the premium Platinum currency ending in February 2020....
Research firm Juniper has released a new report where it revealed that loot boxes will generate $20 billion in revenue by 2025. In the sexily-titled In-game Gambling & Loot Boxes: Legislation, Market Evolution & Forecasts 2021-2025, Juniper claims that money spent on this business model would increase 5% year-on-year. In 2020, an average of $15 billion was spent on loot boxes. By 2025, the firm believes that more than 230 million people will buy these kinds of items, the majority of which will be mobile users....
