A number of US outlets have just published unboxing videos of PS5, giving us a better look at the console itself, and how it compares in size to Xbox Series X, PS4 Pro and many other modern consoles. This is the first event of its kind for the West, following limited previews in Japan. So what do we actually get to see today? Microsoft has trialled the Xbox All Access service in a small capacity already, allowing users to pay a monthly fee for two years and get the console, Xbox Live Gold, controller and Xbox Games Pass without having to shell out hundreds of dollars in one go. This service, similar to a mobile phone contract, could be key to getting a high-end next-gen console in homes regardless of its stand alone price on release....

Following an official statement released by Sony yesterday (Jan 20, 2022) in which the PlayStation platform holder said it expects Microsoft to honour existing “contractual agreements” with PlayStation, Phil Spencer has tweeted his assurance that Microsoft “values [its] relationship” with Sony and that it’s “[the company’s] desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation”. The wording here is interesting; Spencer doesn’t commit to specific games, or even timelines. It could be the case that we’ll see Warzone remain on the platform – Microsoft has previously said it doesn’t want to break up pre-existing communities – and new Call of Duty games could be Xbox exclusives....

Microsoft will be offering its players the chance to get a refund on Cyberpunk 2077. The company said that, like Sony, it wanted to offer players the voice to get their money back. Cyberpunk 2077 has had a rough go of it since coming out. Not only has it come under fire from gamers for its buggy release and under-baked last-gen ports, but Sony really kicked things into overdrive by removing the game from the PlayStation Store late last week....

Backwards compatibility has always been one of Microsoft’s early commitments for Xbox Series X. The console will play existing Xbox One games, as well Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles brought forward to Xbox One. Microsoft confirmed to Digital Foundry that Xbox Series X supports compatibility at the hardware level, a big step up from software emulation currently being used on Xbox One. This allows older games to utilise Xbox Series X’s full potential, making use of 100% of its powerful CPU and GPU....

Hours after Xbox Series X and Series S pre-orders went live, the consoles were sold out everywhere. Though the experience overall was better than PS5’s online stampede, demand nonetheless caused sites like GameStop to crash, where customers reported various errors on Target and Walmart’s websites. According to Microsoft, the demand has been unprecedented. The company said so in a Tweet, but didn’t reveal any hard numbers. The good news is that more consoles will be available at launch on November 10....

The downside of having up to 128 players in your game, it turns out, is that sometimes you’re going to have fairly empty lobbies that need bots to fill them. We already knew that Battlefield 2042 would use bots to pad out emptier servers, but in a recent update on the game, developer DICE has revealed that you have no option of turning the bots off. “You will not experience more AI soldiers than players unless the match is still filling-up, or almost empty,” DICE said in a blog post, before explaining that real players will replace AI bots as they join the match....

There are a couple of new features coming to the battle royale in its next Season: so far we know about Banner Styles and Nicknames and the ability to fall into matches alongside your team. Mediatonic has also revealed that – after many requests from fans in the game’s official Discord – it will be adding the option for you to randomize your costume once Season 2 kicks off. If you do manage to get into the title, you’ll notice that the gameplay changes (or lack thereof) remain a frequent topic of conversation amongst the Overwatch hardcore. Some are complaining that things feel too similar, whilst others are miffed that the likes of Torbjörn and Bastion got temporarily taken out of the game because they were unfairly buggy. But, now that we’ve seen those initial bugs fixed, we’re not expecting any more massive changes any time soon....

I’ve been banging the ‘Forspoken is good, actually’ drum for a while now. After a hands-on with the game earlier this year, I was invited back to play a more advanced build of the game a few weeks ago, and it’s looking better than ever. The game has gone through something of a rehabilitation in the eyes of the public, making up for a terrible meme of a marketing video that rallied every malcontent gamer out there against the studio back in August....

Activision, who’s seen great success with recent revivals in the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon series, has revealed that it’s working on even more remasters. The publisher was keen to point this out in its Q4 FY2019 earnings call. Although specific franchises were not named, CFO Dennis Durkin said there are “several” remastered and re-imagined games coming in 2020. These games will be announced closer to launch, and Durkin didn’t given any hints as to what they might be....

Currently, there are no writers attached to the project, but Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande, and Joshua Long are listed as producers on the title (thanks, Variety). The movie will follow Kazuma Kiryu and his exploits on the mean streets of urban Japan. No specific game or story has been outlined yet, so it’s unclear which Yakuza era the movie will focus on. During a TGS 2020 livestream, Yakuza Studio head Toshihiro Nagoshi noted that the film will only go into full production if the script and project are ‘really good’....

Interestingly, however, the team responsible for the new Splinter Cell is not part of Ubisoft’s Montreal group. The report does not say which studio is actually reviving it, or what kind of project it’s going to be. It does say, however, that Ubisoft wants to make it up to Splinter Cell fans frustrated by the publisher’s attempts to ignore the series, only bringing it back for throwaway VR and mobile offerings....

Slocalp, the French team behind the unique martial arts fighting game Absolver, is moving away from online games with its next project, Sifu. Revealed last week at Sony’s State of Play, Sifu is a story-based, martial arts action game. Just in case it wasn’t clear in the trailer, Sifu does not have an online component, which isn’t exactly where fans expected the studio to go next. Speaking to PC Gamer, executive producer Pierre Tarno explained that the team opted for an entirely single-player game for its follow-up in order to “put all the development efforts in the gameplay” and not split the team’s efforts into creating online play....

Originally set to release on December 3, the game will instead arrive sometime in spring 2022. According to the notice, the game just needs a little more time for fine-tuning. The game contains the two installments of the classic strategy series Advance Wars in a remastered collection. Both games have been rebuilt ‘from the ground up and will also feature a new graphical style. In the game, with the help of Andy, Max, Sami, and other Commanding Officers, you will take charge of an army in strategic, turn-based combat as a tactical adviser for the Orange Star Army....

Never is that more obvious than in a new Reddit post and Youtube video (below) that shows the dedicated Sasafy’ humongous project, and their faithful recreation of Paris’ famed landmark in 1:1 scale. As per the creative survivor, the huge project took over two weeks to complete – with the whole thing weighing in at a frankly ludicrous 40,000+ blocks. Worse yet, the whole process slowed the creator’s PC down to a crawl, with the last five or so levels of construction only running at about 5fps....
